1 What Can You Figure Out?
Sometimes authors do not say everything directly. Use the clues to draw a conclusion.
Clue Set A: Ella clipped a leash onto the dog's collar, grabbed a waste bag, and looked toward the park gate.

What is Ella probably about to do?

Which clue gave it away?

Clue Set B: Three flashlights moved slowly across the backyard while people called, "Pumpkin! Pumpkin!"

What is likely happening?

What clues tell you?

2 Read the Story & Draw Conclusions
Read the story. Answer each question by drawing a conclusion from the clues.
The class lined up beside the buses while Mr. Ramos counted heads twice. Hana kept checking the permission slip tucked into her pocket and smiling at the zoo map her teacher had handed out. When the bus doors opened, she nearly skipped up the steps.
QuestionYour Conclusion
What can you conclude the class is about to do?
How does Hana feel about it?
Why does Mr. Ramos count twice?
Which detail best shows Hana's feeling?
3 Choose the Best Conclusion
Read the clues. Circle the conclusion that makes the MOST sense.

1. The judge lifted the ribbon, and the runners leaned forward with eyes fixed on the track ahead.

2. The phone buzzed, and Rosa's face brightened before she shouted, "We got the tickets!"

3. A mechanic slid under the truck with a wrench while the owner waited nearby.

4 Write Clues for Others
Now be the author. Write 3 clues about a situation. Do not say what is happening directly — let the reader figure it out.

The conclusion should be:

Clue 1:

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

5 Evidence-Based Questions (SBA Practice)
These two-part questions are like the ones on the state test. First answer the question, then find the evidence that supports your answer.

Part A: Based on the details in the passage, what conclusion can you draw?

Part B: Which detail from the text BEST supports your answer to Part A?

Explain in your own words: How does this detail support your answer?

+ Bonus Reading Practice
