1 What Can You Figure Out?
Sometimes authors do not say everything directly. Use the clues to draw a conclusion.
Clue Set A: Nora spread sunscreen on her arms, slipped on flip-flops, and carried a striped towel to the car.

Where is Nora probably going?

What detail helped you most?

Clue Set B: The robot stopped moving, and Omar reached for a screwdriver while his partner looked back at the instruction sheet.

What problem are they likely trying to solve?

Which clue points you there?

2 Read the Story & Draw Conclusions
Read the story. Answer each question by drawing a conclusion from the clues.
Ben stood near the free-throw line bouncing the ball over and over. He kept glancing at the scoreboard, which showed only ten seconds left. The gym was suddenly very quiet, and Ben wiped his hands on his jersey before shooting.
QuestionYour Conclusion
Is Ben in an ordinary moment or an important one?
How do you think Ben feels right now?
What can you conclude about the score?
Which detail best supports your answer?
3 Choose the Best Conclusion
Read the clues. Circle the conclusion that makes the MOST sense.

1. A stack of newspapers sat by the door, and fresh coffee filled the kitchen while the sun was barely up.

2. Kira checked the gate latch twice and counted the ducklings one more time before leaving.

3. The mechanic listened to the engine, then wrote notes on a clipboard and opened the hood again.

4 Write Clues for Others
Now be the author. Write 3 clues about a situation. Do not say what is happening directly — let the reader figure it out.

The conclusion should be:

Clue 1:

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

5 Evidence-Based Questions (SBA Practice)
These two-part questions are like the ones on the state test. First answer the question, then find the evidence that supports your answer.

Part A: Based on the details in the passage, what conclusion can you draw?

Part B: Which detail from the text BEST supports your answer to Part A?

Explain in your own words: How does this detail support your answer?
