1 What Can You Figure Out?
Sometimes authors do not say everything directly. Use the clues to draw a conclusion.
Clue Set A: Aiden carried a flashlight, folded map, and water bottle into the cave entrance. He told his sister to watch her step.

What activity were they probably about to do?

What clues helped you know?

Clue Set B: The front yard had streamers on the fence, extra chairs on the grass, and a giant cooler full of ice.

What was likely about to happen?

Which clue best supports your conclusion?

2 Read the Story & Draw Conclusions
Read the story. Answer each question by drawing a conclusion from the clues.
Rosa opened her backpack and froze. Her homework folder was missing, but she remembered putting it on the kitchen table after dinner. She bit her lip when the teacher said, "Please place your folders in the basket." Rosa quietly asked if she could call home later.
QuestionYour Conclusion

What can you conclude about where the folder is now?
How is Rosa probably feeling?
Which detail best shows her feeling?
3 Choose the Best Conclusion
Read the clues. Circle the conclusion that makes the MOST sense.

1. The cat crouched near the window, tail flicking, while its eyes followed something moving outside.

2. Jamal reread the directions, sharpened his pencil, and drew a deep breath before writing.

3. The trail sign pointed left, but muddy footprints led to the right and then stopped by a stream.

4 Write Clues for Others
Now be the author. Write 3 clues about a situation. Do not say what is happening directly — let the reader figure it out.

The conclusion should be:

Clue 1:

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

5 Evidence-Based Questions (SBA Practice)
These two-part questions are like the ones on the state test. First answer the question, then find the evidence that supports your answer.

Part A: Based on the details in the passage, what conclusion can you draw?

Part B: Which detail from the text BEST supports your answer to Part A?

Explain in your own words: How does this detail support your answer?
