1 What Can You Figure Out?
Sometimes authors do not say everything directly. Use the clues to draw a conclusion.
Clue Set A: Evan zipped his coat all the way up, pulled his hat over his ears, and blew warm air into his gloves.

What can you conclude about the temperature outside?

Which detail gave you the best clue?

Clue Set B: The table was covered with paper, scissors, glue, and glitter. Half-finished cards were lined up to dry.

What were the people likely doing?

What clue helped you decide?

2 Read the Story & Draw Conclusions
Read the story. Answer each question by drawing a conclusion from the clues.
Lena hurried into music class holding her violin case upside down. Sheet music slipped out when she opened it, and one paper fluttered under a chair. She looked at the clock and then at her stand with wide eyes. When the teacher asked the class to begin, Lena whispered, "I hope I remember the first notes."
QuestionYour Conclusion
Do you think Lena feels calm or nervous?
Was Lena well organized before class? Why or why not?
What can you conclude about whether Lena is late or rushed?
Which clue best shows how Lena feels?
3 Choose the Best Conclusion
Read the clues. Circle the conclusion that makes the MOST sense.

1. The soccer players grabbed water bottles, wiped sweat from their faces, and sat quietly on the bench.

2. Noah checked the recipe twice, turned the oven light on, and set the timer for twelve minutes.

3. Pia stared at the scoreboard, bounced on her toes, and squeezed her friend's hand.

4 Write Clues for Others
Now be the author. Write 3 clues about a situation. Do not say what is happening directly — let the reader figure it out.

The conclusion should be:

Clue 1:

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

5 Evidence-Based Questions (SBA Practice)
These two-part questions are like the ones on the state test. First answer the question, then find the evidence that supports your answer.

Part A: Based on the details in the passage, what conclusion can you draw?

Part B: Which detail from the text BEST supports your answer to Part A?

Explain in your own words: How does this detail support your answer?
