1 What Can You Figure Out?
Sometimes authors do not say everything directly. Use the clues to draw a conclusion.
Clue Set A: Jules spread a blanket under the tree, set out paper plates, and checked whether everyone had brought a lunch.

What event is likely about to happen?

Which clue supports your answer best?

Clue Set B: The hallway walls were covered with student drawings, and each picture had a small label with the artist's name.

What might be happening at school?

What clue helped you know?

2 Read the Story & Draw Conclusions
Read the story. Answer each question by drawing a conclusion from the clues.
Niko reread the last chapter and stared at the final sentence for a long time. Then he closed the book slowly, smiled to himself, and wrote the title on the whiteboard under 'Books to Recommend.' When his friend asked, "Was it that good?" Niko just nodded.
QuestionYour Conclusion
What can you conclude about Niko's opinion of the book?
Why did he write the title on the board?
How is Niko feeling at the end?
Which clue best supports your answer?
3 Choose the Best Conclusion
Read the clues. Circle the conclusion that makes the MOST sense.

1. The gardener knelt beside the wilted leaves and pressed a finger into the dry soil.

2. The drummer tapped the sticks together four times while the rest of the band watched closely.

3. The server handed over the check, and the family started collecting jackets and leftovers.

4 Write Clues for Others
Now be the author. Write 3 clues about a situation. Do not say what is happening directly — let the reader figure it out.

The conclusion should be:

Clue 1:

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

5 Evidence-Based Questions (SBA Practice)
These two-part questions are like the ones on the state test. First answer the question, then find the evidence that supports your answer.

Part A: Based on the details in the passage, what conclusion can you draw?

Part B: Which detail from the text BEST supports your answer to Part A?

Explain in your own words: How does this detail support your answer?
