1 What Can You Figure Out?
Sometimes authors do not say everything directly. Use the clues to draw a conclusion.
Clue Set A: The audience sat down, the lights dimmed, and Maya hurried behind the curtain holding a script.

What is Maya likely about to do?

Which clue best supports your answer?

Clue Set B: A row of backpacks rested by the cabin wall, and damp hiking boots were lined up outside the door.

Where are the people probably staying?

What clue helped most?

2 Read the Story & Draw Conclusions
Read the story. Answer each question by drawing a conclusion from the clues.
Ty looked at his science project and noticed the left side leaning lower than the right. He added more tape, stepped back, and frowned. When the bell rang, he carried the model carefully with both hands instead of swinging his arms like usual.
QuestionYour Conclusion
What can you conclude about Ty's project?
How is Ty feeling about carrying it?
Why is he walking more carefully than usual?
Which detail shows his concern most clearly?
3 Choose the Best Conclusion
Read the clues. Circle the conclusion that makes the MOST sense.

1. Mrs. Chen pulled the shades, turned on a projector, and asked students to face the screen.

2. The twins whispered, hid behind the sofa, and smiled when they heard the front door open.

3. The waiter carried menus over, and the family talked about appetizers before anyone ordered dinner.

4 Write Clues for Others
Now be the author. Write 3 clues about a situation. Do not say what is happening directly — let the reader figure it out.

The conclusion should be:

Clue 1:

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

5 Evidence-Based Questions (SBA Practice)
These two-part questions are like the ones on the state test. First answer the question, then find the evidence that supports your answer.

Part A: Based on the details in the passage, what conclusion can you draw?

Part B: Which detail from the text BEST supports your answer to Part A?

Explain in your own words: How does this detail support your answer?
