1 What Can You Figure Out?
Sometimes authors do not say everything directly. Use the clues to draw a conclusion.
Clue Set A: The principal adjusted the microphone while families filled rows of folding chairs in the gym.

What is probably about to happen?

What clue best supports that?

Clue Set B: Milo put a bandage on his finger, swept up the broken ceramic pieces, and reached for the glue.

What can you conclude just happened?

Which detail helped you know?

2 Read the Story & Draw Conclusions
Read the story. Answer each question by drawing a conclusion from the clues.
Keisha opened the weather app again, then moved the soccer cones from the field to the equipment shed. Dark clouds rolled in, and a gust of wind knocked over the empty water cups beside her. She blew her whistle and called the team toward the school doors.
QuestionYour Conclusion
What decision did Keisha make?
Why did she make it?
How urgent does the situation seem?
Which detail supports your answer best?
3 Choose the Best Conclusion
Read the clues. Circle the conclusion that makes the MOST sense.

1. The chef tasted the soup, added a pinch of salt, and nodded before calling for bowls.

2. Parker practiced saying the lines under his breath while peeking through a small opening in the curtain.

3. The hikers refilled their bottles and unfolded the map near the fork in the trail.

4 Write Clues for Others
Now be the author. Write 3 clues about a situation. Do not say what is happening directly — let the reader figure it out.

The conclusion should be:

Clue 1:

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

5 Evidence-Based Questions (SBA Practice)
These two-part questions are like the ones on the state test. First answer the question, then find the evidence that supports your answer.

Part A: Based on the details in the passage, what conclusion can you draw?

Part B: Which detail from the text BEST supports your answer to Part A?

Explain in your own words: How does this detail support your answer?
