1 What Can You Figure Out?
Sometimes authors do not say everything directly. Use the clues to draw a conclusion.
Clue Set A: Tessa taped a name tag to her shirt, checked the schedule by the entrance, and took a deep breath before stepping into the large room.

What might Tessa be arriving for?

What clue supports that idea?

Clue Set B: The porch light clicked on, and Dad carried a toolbox outside while Mom pointed toward the broken railing.

What are the adults probably about to do?

Which clue helped you conclude that?

2 Read the Story & Draw Conclusions
Read the story. Answer each question by drawing a conclusion from the clues.
Leo held his library book close and kept returning to the same page. Each time he looked up, he checked whether the classroom clock had reached 2:30 yet. When it finally did, Leo smiled and hurried to the front table for the reading club meeting.
QuestionYour Conclusion
What was Leo waiting for?
How do you know the meeting mattered to him?
Was Leo bored or excited while he waited?
Which detail shows that most clearly?
3 Choose the Best Conclusion
Read the clues. Circle the conclusion that makes the MOST sense.

1. Mina carried watering cans to each row and touched the dry soil before pouring slowly.

2. The announcer called lane numbers, and swimmers adjusted their goggles at the pool edge.

3. A fresh layer of snow covered the sidewalk, and the children grabbed sleds from the garage.

4 Write Clues for Others
Now be the author. Write 3 clues about a situation. Do not say what is happening directly — let the reader figure it out.

The conclusion should be:

Clue 1:

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

5 Evidence-Based Questions (SBA Practice)
These two-part questions are like the ones on the state test. First answer the question, then find the evidence that supports your answer.

Part A: Based on the details in the passage, what conclusion can you draw?

Part B: Which detail from the text BEST supports your answer to Part A?

Explain in your own words: How does this detail support your answer?

+ Bonus Reading Practice
