1 What Can You Figure Out?
🧠 Sometimes authors don't say everything directly. Use the clues to draw a conclusion about what is happening.
Clue Set A: Maria put on her boots and raincoat. She grabbed her umbrella near the door. She looked out the window and sighed.

What can you conclude about the weather?

What clue helped you?

Clue Set B: The house smelled like chocolate and vanilla. Bowls and spoons were everywhere. A timer beeped on the counter.

What was happening in the house?

What clue helped you?

2 Read the Story & Draw Conclusions
📖 Read the story. Answer each question by drawing a conclusion from the clues.
Jake walked into the classroom late. His hair was messy and his shoes were untied. He yawned three times before sitting down. When the teacher asked him to open his book, Jake realized he had left it at home. He put his head down on his desk.

"Rough morning?" whispered his friend Leo. Jake just nodded.
Question Your Conclusion
Did Jake have a good morning or a bad morning?
Do you think Jake got enough sleep? What clues tell you?
Was Jake prepared for school? How do you know?
How does Jake feel? What clue tells you?
3 Choose the Best Conclusion
🎯 Read the clues. Circle the conclusion that makes the MOST sense.

1. The dog wagged its tail, jumped up, and ran to the door when it heard the car pull up.

2. Sarah looked at the dark clouds, checked the weather on her phone, and cancelled the picnic.

3. Mom smiled and clapped when she opened the card. She gave Tommy a big hug and said "This is the best gift ever!"

4 Write Clues for Others
🕵️ Now YOU be the author! Write 3 clues about a situation. Don't say what is happening directly — let the reader figure it out!

The conclusion should be:

Clue 1:

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

5 Evidence-Based Questions (SBA Practice)
These two-part questions are like the ones on the state test. First answer the question, then find the evidence that supports your answer.

Part A: Based on the details in the passage, what conclusion can you draw?

Part B: Which detail from the text BEST supports your answer to Part A?

Explain in your own words: How does this detail support your answer?
