1 What Can You Figure Out?
Sometimes authors do not say everything directly. Use the clues to draw a conclusion.
Clue Set A: The students whispered in line, held folded papers, and looked toward the voting booths in the library.

What are the students probably about to do?

Which clue best supports that?

Clue Set B: Steam covered the bathroom mirror, and a towel was draped across the counter beside a wet hairbrush.

What probably happened in the bathroom?

Which clue helps you know?

2 Read the Story & Draw Conclusions
Read the story. Answer each question by drawing a conclusion from the clues.
Ava looked across the lunch table and realized her drink was missing. Then she noticed a wet ring beside Noah's tray and saw him staring at his spilled milk with wide eyes. Ava reached for extra napkins before the milk could drip onto her worksheet.
QuestionYour Conclusion
What can you conclude happened to Ava's drink?
How is Noah probably feeling?
Why does Ava grab napkins so quickly?
Which clue best supports your answer?
3 Choose the Best Conclusion
Read the clues. Circle the conclusion that makes the MOST sense.

1. Jordan tightened the straps on his helmet, checked the brakes, and rolled his bike to the start line.

2. The room was full of wrapped boxes, and everyone waited until Grandma sat down in the biggest chair.

3. The librarian placed a finger to her lips, and the boys immediately lowered their voices.

4 Write Clues for Others
Now be the author. Write 3 clues about a situation. Do not say what is happening directly — let the reader figure it out.

The conclusion should be:

Clue 1:

Clue 2:

Clue 3:

5 Evidence-Based Questions (SBA Practice)
These two-part questions are like the ones on the state test. First answer the question, then find the evidence that supports your answer.

Part A: Based on the details in the passage, what conclusion can you draw?

Part B: Which detail from the text BEST supports your answer to Part A?

Explain in your own words: How does this detail support your answer?

+ Bonus Reading Practice
