* Learning Goal
Read both texts. Think about what each author wants the reader to know, feel, or do. This is practice set 9 of 10.
1 Text A
Notice how the author presents facts and useful information.
Text A: Trail Repair Project

Volunteers will gather at the Cedar Loop trailhead on Saturday to repair signs, clear fallen branches, and fill in washed-out sections of the path. The parks department estimates the work will take about four hours.

Heavy rains last month caused several trail markers to fall and left mud across the main loop. The repaired trail should be ready for hikers by the following weekend.
2 Text B
Notice how the author tries to persuade the reader.
Text B: Protect Our Trail

The Cedar Loop trail is where families hike, runners train, and students explore nature on field trips. But after last month's storms, the trail is in rough shape — broken signs, fallen branches, and muddy paths make it hard to enjoy.

Join the repair project this Saturday and help keep the trail welcoming and safe for every visitor. A few hours of work can make a difference that lasts all year.
3 Compare and Explain
Use both texts to support your answers.

1. What is the author's purpose in Text A?

2. What is the author's purpose in Text B?

3. Which text is more persuasive, and what details make it persuasive?

4. If you wanted simple facts, which text would be more useful? Why?

✦ SBA-Style Reflection
Answer using evidence from your work above. On the state test (Smarter Balanced), you will need to explain your thinking clearly.

Constructed Response: Look at your answers above. Choose one and explain how you decided on your answer. Use at least one detail or example.
