* Learning Goal
Read both texts. Think about what each author wants the reader to know, feel, or do. This is practice set 2 of 10.
1 Text A
Notice how the author presents facts and useful information.
Text A: Library Update
The town library will add new study tables and longer weekend hours starting next month. The head librarian explained that more students have been using the library for homework help and group projects.
Construction workers will also install better lighting in the reading rooms. The changes should be finished by the end of November, and regular hours will continue during the work.
2 Text B
Notice how the author tries to persuade the reader.
Text B: Support Our Library Plan
Our library is more than shelves of books — it is a place where students discover new ideas and families spend time learning together. But right now, there are not enough tables, the lights are too dim, and weekend hours are too short.
Vote for the library upgrade this fall. A better library means a stronger community for all of us.
3 Compare and Explain
Use both texts to support your answers.
1. What is the author's purpose in Text A?
2. What is the author's purpose in Text B?
3. Which text is more persuasive, and what details make it persuasive?
4. If you wanted simple facts, which text would be more useful? Why?
