* Learning Goal
Read both texts. Think about what each author wants the reader to know, feel, or do. This is practice set 6 of 10.
1 Text A
Notice how the author presents facts and useful information.
Text A: Bus Route Change

The district will add one more bus stop near the corner of Oak Street and Pine Avenue starting Monday. The new stop was requested by families who currently walk more than half a mile to reach the nearest pickup point.

The schedule will shift by about three minutes for riders on Route 14. Updated timetables are available on the district website and at the front office of every school.
2 Text B
Notice how the author tries to persuade the reader.
Text B: Speak Up for Safe Stops

Every student deserves a safe, convenient way to get to school. Right now, some families on the south side walk along busy roads with no sidewalks just to reach the nearest bus stop.

Support the new Oak Street stop and let the district know that safe routes matter. When students arrive on time and without stress, they are ready to learn.
3 Compare and Explain
Use both texts to support your answers.

1. What is the author's purpose in Text A?

2. What is the author's purpose in Text B?

3. Which text is more persuasive, and what details make it persuasive?

4. If you wanted simple facts, which text would be more useful? Why?

✦ SBA-Style Reflection
Answer using evidence from your work above. On the state test (Smarter Balanced), you will need to explain your thinking clearly.

Constructed Response: Look at your answers above. Choose one and explain how you decided on your answer. Use at least one detail or example.
