* Learning Goal
Read both texts. Think about what each author wants the reader to know, feel, or do.
1 Text A
Notice how the author presents facts and useful information.
Text A: Park Cleanup News

Families will meet Saturday to pick up litter and plant shrubs in River Park. The city parks department reported that the park has seen more visitors this year than any year before. Extra trash cans and recycling bins will also be placed near the playground and walking paths.

Volunteers should bring gloves and water bottles. The cleanup will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Hot dogs and lemonade will be served afterward to thank everyone who helps.
2 Text B
Notice how the author tries to persuade the reader.
Text B: Help Save Our Park!

River Park is one of the most beautiful places in our city, but it needs your help right now. Litter is piling up near the pond, and weeds are crowding out the flower beds that families enjoy.

Join us this Saturday and be part of the solution. Even one hour of your time can make the park cleaner, safer, and more beautiful for everyone. Together, we can show our community that we care about the places we share.
3 Compare and Explain
Use both texts to support your answers.

1. What is the author's purpose in Text A?

2. What is the author's purpose in Text B?

3. Which text is more persuasive, and what details make it persuasive?

4. If you wanted simple facts, which text would be more useful? Why?
