Why Coral Reefs Matter

Coral reefs are underwater structures built by tiny animals called coral polyps. Reefs provide shelter for many kinds of fish and sea creatures. Some people call reefs the rainforests of the sea.

Reefs can also protect coastlines from strong waves. They slow the water before it reaches shore. This helps reduce erosion in some areas.

Warm water, pollution, and damage from boats can harm coral reefs. When reefs are protected, many animals benefit. Healthy reefs also support fishing and tourism.
