1 Nonfiction Passage

How Owls Hunt

Owls are nighttime hunters with excellent hearing. Their ears can help them find movement even when they cannot see well. Many owls also have soft feathers that help them fly quietly.

An owl often waits on a branch and listens before it attacks. When it hears a small animal below, it swoops down quickly. Its sharp talons help it grab prey and carry it away.

Owls need safe places to rest, nest, and hunt. Forest loss can make survival harder for them. People can help by protecting habitats and leaving old trees standing when possible.
