How Bridges Work

Bridges allow people and vehicles to cross rivers, roads, and valleys. Engineers design bridges to support heavy loads safely. Different bridge shapes work best in different places.

Some bridges use arches to spread weight outward. Others use cables to hold the roadway up from above. Engineers choose a design based on distance, materials, and cost.

A strong bridge must be inspected and repaired over time. Weather, traffic, and age can wear down materials. Regular maintenance helps keep bridges safe for everyone.
