The Science of Shadows

A shadow forms when an object blocks light. If the light source moves, the shadow may change size or direction. The same thing happens if the object moves.

At midday, the sun is high in the sky, so shadows may look short. In the morning or evening, the sun is lower and shadows often stretch longer. This makes shadows useful for observing how light changes during the day.

Scientists and students can use shadows to study the position of the sun. Artists also pay attention to shadows when they draw. Understanding shadows helps people notice patterns in light.
