1 Read the Story
๐Ÿ“– Read this story carefully. You will write a summary of it!
The Bake Sale Fundraiser

The student council at Brookline Elementary planned a bake sale to raise money for new playground equipment. A third grader named Ana volunteered to help organize the treats table every morning before school.

Two days before the sale, a rainstorm flooded the supply closet where the paper plates and napkins were stored. Ana worried they wouldn't have anything to serve the baked goods on. She asked her teacher for help, and together they found leftover craft paper that could be folded into simple plates.

On the day of the sale, the folded paper plates worked perfectly, and the bake sale raised enough money to buy a brand new swing set. Ana felt proud that her quick thinking helped save the fundraiser.
2 Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then
๐ŸŽฏ Use the SWBST strategy to organize your summary.

Somebody โ†’ Wanted โ†’ But โ†’ So โ†’ Then

Part Fill In
Somebody (Who?)
Wanted (What did they want?)
But (What was the problem?)
So (What did they do?)
Then (How did it end?)
3 Write a Summary
โœ๏ธ Now write your summary in 2โ€“3 sentences. Include only the MOST important parts โ€” leave out small details!

Tip: A good summary does NOT include: the exact flavors of baked goods sold, what color the craft paper was, or how many napkins were ruined.

4 Summary vs. Detail
๐Ÿ“‹ Decide: does each statement belong in a summary, or is it just a detail?
Statement Summary or Detail?
