1 Read the Story
๐Ÿ“– Read this story carefully. You will write a summary of it!
The Robotics Competition

The robotics club at Jefferson Middle School had spent months building a robot for the regional competition. Their team leader, Sasha, was in charge of programming the robot to pick up small blocks and stack them.

During the final practice run the night before the competition, the robot's arm jammed and stopped working completely. Sasha felt her heart race as she realized there wasn't much time left to fix it. She and her teammates stayed late, carefully rewiring the arm and testing the code line by line.

By morning, the robot worked perfectly again. At the competition, their robot stacked the blocks faster than any other team, and Jefferson Middle School took first place in the regional finals.
2 Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then
๐ŸŽฏ Use the SWBST strategy to organize your summary.

Somebody โ†’ Wanted โ†’ But โ†’ So โ†’ Then

Part Fill In
Somebody (Who?)
Wanted (What did they want?)
But (What was the problem?)
So (What did they do?)
Then (How did it end?)
3 Write a Summary
โœ๏ธ Now write your summary in 2โ€“3 sentences. Include only the MOST important parts โ€” leave out small details!

Tip: A good summary does NOT include: the exact wires that were replaced, what time they finished fixing it, or how many teams competed.

4 Summary vs. Detail
๐Ÿ“‹ Decide: does each statement belong in a summary, or is it just a detail?
Statement Summary or Detail?
The robotics club built a robot for a competition.
The robot's arm jammed during final practice.
Sasha and her team rewired the arm and tested the code.
The robot worked perfectly by morning.
Their robot stacked blocks faster than any other team.
Jefferson Middle School won first place.
