1 Read the Story
๐Ÿ“– Read this story carefully. You will write a summary of it!
The Rescued Kite

Every spring, Westfield Elementary held a kite-flying contest on the football field. This year, a fourth grader named Owen built his own kite from scratch using bamboo sticks and bright red paper.

On contest day, Owen's kite soared higher than anyone else's, but a sudden gust of wind snapped the string. The kite spun wildly and landed in a tall pine tree at the edge of the field. Owen felt his stomach drop as he watched his hard work stuck in the branches.

The gym teacher, Mr. Ortiz, grabbed a long pole with a hook from the equipment shed and carefully worked the kite loose. Owen cheered as his kite floated back down safely. He tied a stronger knot this time and finished the contest in third place, grinning the whole time.
2 Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then
๐ŸŽฏ Use the SWBST strategy to organize your summary.

Somebody โ†’ Wanted โ†’ But โ†’ So โ†’ Then

Part Fill In
Somebody (Who?)
Wanted (What did they want?)
But (What was the problem?)
So (What did they do?)
Then (How did it end?)
3 Write a Summary
โœ๏ธ Now write your summary in 2โ€“3 sentences. Include only the MOST important parts โ€” leave out small details!

Tip: A good summary does NOT include: what color paper Owen used, the exact words Mr. Ortiz said, or how many contestants signed up.

4 Summary vs. Detail
๐Ÿ“‹ Decide: does each statement belong in a summary, or is it just a detail?
Statement Summary or Detail?

A gust of wind broke the string and the kite got stuck in a tree.
Mr. Ortiz used a pole with a hook from the shed.
The kite was rescued and Owen finished third place.
Owen tied a stronger knot before flying again.
