1 Read the Story
๐Ÿ“– Read this story carefully. You will write a summary of it!
The Talent Show

Every year, Wilson Elementary School held a talent show. This year, a second grader named Mia decided to enter. She loved to sing, but she had never performed in front of a big crowd before.

For three weeks, Mia practiced every day after school. Her older brother helped her choose a song and her mom made her a sparkly costume. On the night of the show, Mia peeked from behind the curtain and saw hundreds of people in the audience. Her hands started to shake.

"You've got this," her brother whispered. Mia took a deep breath and walked onto the stage. When the music started, something magical happened โ€” she forgot about the crowd and just sang her heart out. The audience clapped and cheered. Mia didn't win first place, but she felt like a champion because she had faced her fear.
2 Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then
๐ŸŽฏ Use the SWBST strategy to organize your summary.

Somebody โ†’ Wanted โ†’ But โ†’ So โ†’ Then

Part Fill In
Somebody (Who?)
Wanted (What did they want?)
But (What was the problem?)
So (What did they do?)
Then (How did it end?)
3 Write a Summary
โœ๏ธ Now write your summary in 2โ€“3 sentences. Include only the MOST important parts โ€” leave out small details!

Tip: A good summary does NOT include: what the costume looked like, the brother's exact words, or exactly how long she practiced.

4 Summary vs. Detail
๐Ÿ“‹ Decide: does each statement belong in a summary, or is it just a detail?
Statement Summary or Detail?
Mia entered the school talent show.
Her mom made her a sparkly costume.
Mia was nervous but sang her heart out.
She practiced for three weeks.
She felt like a champion even though she didn't win.
Her brother said "You've got this."
