1 Read the Story
๐Ÿ“– Read this story carefully. You will write a summary of it!
The Storm Before the Game

The Eastside Eagles had practiced all season for the championship soccer game at Riverside Park. Their captain, Malia, had scored the winning goal in every game leading up to the final.

On game day, dark clouds rolled in just before kickoff, and the referee paused the match due to lightning in the distance. Malia worried the game might be cancelled entirely after all their hard work. The team waited nervously in the locker room, checking the weather radar on a coach's phone every few minutes.

After thirty minutes, the storm passed and the sun came out. The game resumed, and Malia scored the winning goal once again, securing the championship trophy for the Eagles.
2 Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then
๐ŸŽฏ Use the SWBST strategy to organize your summary.

Somebody โ†’ Wanted โ†’ But โ†’ So โ†’ Then

Part Fill In
Somebody (Who?)
Wanted (What did they want?)
But (What was the problem?)
So (What did they do?)
Then (How did it end?)
3 Write a Summary
โœ๏ธ Now write your summary in 2โ€“3 sentences. Include only the MOST important parts โ€” leave out small details!

Tip: A good summary does NOT include: the exact time the game paused, what brand of phone the coach used, or how the locker room was decorated.

4 Summary vs. Detail
๐Ÿ“‹ Decide: does each statement belong in a summary, or is it just a detail?
Statement Summary or Detail?
The championship game was delayed by a storm.
The referee paused the match because of lightning.
The team waited nervously in the locker room.
The game resumed after the storm passed.
Malia scored the winning goal and the Eagles won the championship.
The team checked a weather radar on a phone.
